Art meets science at FIU’s Biscayne Bay Campus with presentation of outdoor sculpture garden

Florida International University will mark the addition of four monumental works of art to the Biscayne Bay Campus at a presentation on Monday, April 14th at 5:30 p.m.

The unique stainless steel sculptures, which tower as high as 10 feet, are on loan to the university from environmental artist Ross Power, who has been creating sculptures since 1970. His commissioned works are displayed in locations such as the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Maui and Metro Goldwyn Mayer Film Studios in Los Angeles. His artwork also has been featured in the Key Largo Undersea Art Gallery.

“Florida International University is the perfect place to display these sculptures given their global nature. The location by the bay where people can enjoy them just magnifies their potency,” Power said.

The four sculptures that make up the Biscayne Bay sculpture garden are: “Focus,” an eight-foot tall by 14-foot diameter sculpture.

  • “Focus” will permanently be installed underwater at some point over the next five years and transformed into a sculptural marine habitat.
  • “Future Wave,” seven six-foot-tall steel forms that were submerged in 40 feet of Atlantic water off the Key Largo coast in 1985 and left for one year.
  • “Reflective Man,” nine stainless steel forms ranging from six to 10-feet tall, arranged along a pathway.
  • “No Turning Back,” a 10-foot tall by 30-foot diameter undulating sculpture.

“This clearly shows our commitment to the environment,” said Damian Fernandez, Vice Provost for the Biscayne Bay Campus. “Our aim is to provide numerous interdisciplinary activities, such as the submergence of ‘Focus,’ to celebrate a new era of ecological aesthetics at our campus.”
