FIU students release album for class project

A group of Florida International University students is throwing a bash to celebrate the release of “All Rights Reserved,” a CD they produced for their Business of Music class.

The release party is set for Friday, April 11th at Flavour Nightclub, located at 2895 Mcfarlane Rd. in Coconut Grove, beginning at 9 p.m. The party will include live musical performances by local artists and students featured on the album. The event is free and open to anyone 18 years or older.

The compilation CD was produced in the Business of Music Class taught by instructor Oswaldo Rossi this semester. Students created a mock record label and selected the songs to be placed on the CD, which include original music with diverse genres such as rock, hip hop, and soft ballads.

The purpose of the album was to take the skills learned in the classroom and apply them in the real world. Besides selecting the songs, students were responsible for securing licenses, designing the package artwork, choosing a title, fund raising in order to underwrite the costs of the project and marketing their product.

“While I was putting together my syllabus, I asked myself, ‘What kind of approach would I appreciate if I were a student longing to work in the music industry?’ I figured this would give the students real insight on what goes behind producing, marketing and promoting an album,” said Rossi, who also is director for legal and business affairs for EMI Televisa Music.

In addition to serving as a hands-on experience for students, the project also will bring awareness to the independent local music scene, Rossi said. “All Rights Reserved” will be a noncommercial release.

It is the fourth CD produced by FIU students. Last semester the Business of Music class released “Secrets of Sound,” a compilation album with 14 tracks that also featured original music.
