FIU business fraternity team wins Johnson & Johnson competition

Florida International University’s Xi Sigma chapter of Alpha Kappa Psi, the country’s oldest professional business fraternity, won first place in Johnson and Johnson’s 15th annual Business Case Study Competition.

During last month’s competition, held at Johnson & Johnson headquarters in New Brunswick, N.J., the team of FIU students was honored for its powerful financial analysis, pivotal reviews, and excellent communication skills. For its victory, the team received $3,000 and an honorary wall plaque.

Sponsored by Johnson & Johnson, the National Business Case Study is an undergraduate commerce competition involving 10 universities. Competitors use their analytical, technical, and communication skills to review and resolve a fictional company’s complaint.

The teams that participated were selected through competitions at their respective universities, which included Penn State University, University of Florida, Seton Hall University, and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

The FIU team members were Matthew Ohashi, Anthony Munyaka, Maria Sabando, Jaime Montalvan, and Isselle Medina. Xi Sigma President Michael Jadoo and FIU Career Services Office Director Lenroy Jones accompanied the team.

“It was a wonderful experience to watch young, professional-minded students exercise effective communication skills and knowledge,” said Jones, who also is part of Alpha Kappa Psi, which has more than 200,000 members around the world. “They are excellent examples of career savvy students at FIU.”

Apart from the competition, students also had the opportunity to interact with a dozen representatives of Johnson & Johnson, participate in mock interviews, tour the company’s headquarters and attend a company presentation.
