FIU student government president named chairman of Florida Student Association

Arthur “AJ” Meyer, president of the Student Government Association of Florida International University-University Park, is the new chairman of the Florida Student Association.

The Florida Student Association (FSA), founded in 1976, is led by presidents, vice-presidents and staff from student government associations at Florida’s 11 public universities.

In their last meeting, the FSA board of directors voted 6-4 to name Meyer as chairman, making him a full voting member of the Florida Board of Governors (BOG), which oversees the operation and management of Florida’s public university system. He is the second FIU student to chair the FSA and sit on the BOG.

“We are proud that one of our students will play such an important role in advancing higher education in our state,” said FIU President Modesto A. Maidique. “AJ is a shining example of our next generation of leaders.”

The BOG is made up of 17 members, 14 of whom are chosen by Florida’s governor and confirmed by the Florida Senate for a term of seven years. The remaining members are the President of the Advisory Council of the Faculty Senate, the Commissioner of Education, and the FSA chairman.

“I am proud that I received the support of the majority of the student body presidents and their institutions for the chair position,” Meyer said. “I am humbled by this opportunity to serve and to help strengthen higher education in the state of Florida for the next year.”

When Meyer is away due to BOG affairs, Paige LaPointe, vice-president of the University Park Student Government Association will assume his duties at the university.
