Middle school students team up with ExxonMobil engineers in science camp at FIU

WHAT: A group of South Florida middle school students are on a two-week summer adventure involving science experiments and a taste of college life as part of the ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp sponsored by Florida International University. On “ExxonMobil Day” students will have the chance to conduct hands-on experiments, participate in interactive demonstrations, and learn about engineering and other science careers with ExxonMobil engineers and scientists. They also will meet Bernard Harris, the first African-American to walk in space.

The students will have a Raft Rally (a design competition) as well as model aircraft flight competitions. The students also will display solar-powered mini-robots that they built.

WHO: Participants will include 48 sixth-to-eighth graders, along with their families and invited guests that will include Harris and representatives of ExxonMobil Corp., Miami-Dade Public Schools and the Bernard Harris Foundation.

WHEN: From 2-5 p.m. on Thursday, July 10, 2008.

WHERE: Florida International University-University Park, 11200 SW 8th St., in the patio area in front of the Green Library.

WHY: Studies show that the United States will face a critical shortage of engineers, scientists and other technically trained workers in the future. To help address this crisis, former astronaut Bernard Harris and ExxonMobil have teamed up to develop 25 two-week free summer camps across the country that offer innovative math and science programs to encourage middle school students to stay in school, develop their knowledge in these disciplines and foster their interest to eventually pursue careers in these fields.
