William Hardin
Dr. Hardin is the director of real estate programs in the Department of Finance and Real Estate. He has an extensive publication record in top real estate journals and also has presented his research at major real estate and finance conferences including those of the American Real Estate Society, the Asian Real Estate Society, the American Real Estate and Urban Economics Association, and the Financial Management Association. Prior to joining the faculty of FIU, Dr. Hardin held the Robert W. Warren Chair of Real Estate at Mississippi State University, where he directed both the real estate and construction management programs, and served on the faculty of Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA.

Jerry Haar
Dr. Haar is the associate dean for international affairs and projects and professor of management and international business. Dr. Haar was Director of Washington Programs for the Council of the Americas, a New York-based business association of over 200 corporations comprising a majority of U.S. private investment in Latin America, and served as Special Assistant to two cabinet secretaries. He can address issues of international economics including the economies of Latin America, financial markets, and competitiveness.

Emmanuel Roussakis
Dr. Roussakis, professor emeritus in the Department of Finance and Real Estate, was dean of the School of Business at University of Nicosia, the largest private graduate and undergraduate educational institution in Nicosia, Cyprus, from 2003 to 2006.
Dr. Roussakis has taught at American universities in the United States and Europe, worked for American and European banks, and served in an advisory capacity to government agencies, both in the United States and abroad. He participated in the negotiations for Greece’s admission to the European Economic Community in the area of commercial banks and banking policy. He was co-recipient of a Florida State Research (STAR) grant for the study of international banking legislation and taxation

Krishnan Dandapani
Dr. Dandapani, a professor in the Department of Finance and Real Estate, has 15 years experience in performing research and financial analysis for corporations, governments, and institutions throughout the world. He was the principal investigator for “The Financial Implications of the Latin American Trade Block,” a research project based on statistical analysis of countries (to become part of the Latin American Trade Block). Dr. Dandapani also can discuss the financial impacts of hurricanes. In December of 2000, Dr. Dandapani received a grant from the State of Florida’s Department of Insurance to create a Hurricane Loss Prediction Model. He is preparing a book on the financial impact of mitigating hurricane damages and is helping the International Hurricane Center to develop a certificate program and to train meteorologists.

Deanne Butchey
Dr. Butchey is an instructor at the Department of Finance and Real Estate. Before joining FIU, Dr. Butchey worked as a Financial Services Stock Research Analyst at Credit Suisse First Boston in their Toronto offices. Prior to this, she was a financial advisor at Merrill Lynch in Toronto. Her professional qualifications include being a Registered Representative, licensed to sell securities in Canada. Her research in finance focuses on behavioral finance and the psychology of financial markets-a rapidly expanding segment of the finance literature.

Bruce Nissen
Dr. Nissen is the Director of Research at the Center for Labor Research and Studies at Florida International University. Dr. Nissen has been a labor educator and labor studies professor since 1981. His areas of teaching expertise encompass both practical trade union courses and more theoretical academic classes. He serves on the national executive committee of the United Association for Labor Education (UALE). Dr. Nissen’s academic interests have led him into a number of professional, civic, and community activities. He has provided expert testimony before Congressional committees and various state and local study commissions, and has consulted on public policy for public officials. He authors an annual Labor Report on the State of Florida, which is published by the Center every year at Labor Day. He authored the study The Impact of a Living Wage Ordinance on Miami-Dade County, also published by the Center.

John Zdanowicz
Dr. Zdanowicz, director of the Jerome Bain Real Estate Institute and a professor in the Department of Finance and Real Estate, has had many years of consulting experience; namely, with the U.S. Department of Justice and U.S. Congress, Office of Technology Assessment. He serves as an instructor for the Financial Fraud Institute, Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, and the U.S. Department of Treasury. He has presented seminars for the American Institute of Banking, Lincoln First Bank, Rochester Telephone Corporation, and Eastman Kodak.

Antonio Jorge
Dr. Jorge is professor emeritus of political economics at FIU. His expertise includes the economics of oil supply and demand, as well as the economics of the energy industry. Dr. Jorge is available for interviews in both English and Spanish.

George Philippidis
Dr. Philippidis is associate director of FIU’s Applied Research Center, co-director of the Energy Business Forum, and director of the Center for Energy and Technology of the Americas at FIU. Dr. Philippidis, an expert on energy security issues, can discuss the political, economic and other ramifications of energy security policy, including issues such as oil and offshore drilling.

Hurricanes and the Economy

Hugh E. Willoughby
Dr. Willoughby, a distinguished research professor in the Department of Earth Science, researches tropical cyclone formation and intensification and has flown more than 400 missions into the eyes of the storms as a meteorologist for the federal government. Beyond the scientific aspects of a hurricane, Dr. Willoughby’s research has includes the economic effects of hurricanes on a local and national scale. He also sits on the Florida Commission on Hurricane Loss Projection Methodology.

Shahid Hamid
The recent groundbreaking research work of Dr. Hamid, Professor of Finance at the CBA at Florida International University, has focused on the insurance and economic consequences of hurricanes. Currently, he leads a multi-disciplinary team in a research grant project to develop computer models to estimate hurricane risk and property losses. Creation of this public model was authorized in 2001 by the Legislature to be used as a check and balance against models used by private insurance companies to estimate and set hurricane insurance rates. The model also has some limited capability to estimate the benefit from certain mitigation efforts.

Alan Carsrud
Dr. Carsrud is Clinical Professor of Management, Professor of Industrial Engineering and Executive Director of the Global Entrepreneurship Center at Florida International University.  Dr. Carsrud was on the start-up team at People Express Airlines and served as Founding Director of CytoSignal, a biotech firm in Irvine. He currently is on the board of United Enterprise Fund (UEF) in New York City. Dr. Carsrud has served as Vice-President for both the International Council for Small Business and the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship and was on the Board of Directors of the Family Firm Institute.
