On a picture-perfect fall afternoon in South Florida, more than 16,000 screaming fans turned out to watch the FIU football team take on No. 12-ranked University of South Florida on Sept. 20 in a gleaming, renovated FIU Stadium. While the Golden Panthers didn’t leave the pristine field with a victory, the 17-9 score guaranteed they left with something just as important: respect.

“We really, really played with everything we had,” FIU coach Mario Cristobal said. “Effort was not questioned today.”
