Setting a new course in U.S.-Latin American relations: McCain vs. Obama


MIAMI – Florida International University’s College of Business Administration and the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce will present a discussion on the future course of U.S.-Latin American relations after the November presidential elections.

Top Latin American policy advisors to candidates Sen. John McCain and Sen. Barack Obama, as well as two leading academics on Latin American affairs and U.S.-Latin American relations, will discuss the candidates’ positions on a host of issues, including security, immigration, drug interdiction, energy, trade, poverty reduction, foreign assistance, and democratic governance. Future policies toward Cuba and Venezuela, as well as Bolivia, Nicaragua and Ecuador, also will be on the agenda.

The event is free to the media and will take place on Oct. 2 at 11:45 a.m. at the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, 1601 Biscayne Boulevard, Ballroom Level.

Veteran TIME Miami and Latin America bureau chief Tim Padgett will moderate the discussion, entitled “Setting a New Course in U.S.-Latin American Relations: McCain vs. Obama.” Panelists will include Eduardo Gamarra, professor and the former director of the Latin American & Caribbean Center at Florida International University; Ambassador Luis Lauredo, a senior consultant at the Hunton & Williams law firm and policy advisor to Obama; Ambassador Otto Reich, president of Otto Reich Associates, LLC and policy advisor to McCain; and Susan K. Purcell, director of the Center for Hemispheric Policy at the University of Miami.
