FIU’s Cuban Research Center presents U.S. premiere of film: “Social Club Buena Vista: At Second Glance”

WHAT: Florida International University’s Cuban Research Institute and the University of Miami’s Latin American Studies Program and Center for Latin American Studies will present the U.S. premiere screening of the documentary film “Social Club Buena Vista: At Second Glance,” a film by Carsten Möller. The million-dollar success of traditional Cuban music has turned the resonant name into a popular term used across the globe. But did the Social Club Buena Vista really exist? In the Oscar nominated film, Möller starts his own journey in search of the club and the story behind it. With curiosity and respect, the documentary closes in on the neighborhood of Buenavista and its people and in so doing, examines the history of a forgotten legend. It portrays the veterans of the former club, as well as the youth of today with gentle dialog between hard-lived experiences and dreams unfolding.

WHO: Carsten Möller is a documentary filmmaker and lecturer at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig, Germany. His films mainly deal with political and social phenomena in Latin America and have been widely shown at international film festivals. Möller grew up in East Germany before the fall of the Berlin Wall and participated in many of the events leading up to Germany’s unification.

WHEN AND WHERE: The screening will be followed by a panel discussion “Music, Race and Globalization” with filmmaker Carsten Möller on Friday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. in the Bill Cosford Cinema at the University of Miami, 1380 Miller Drive, Coral Gables.
