FIU Theatre invites you to experience Shakespeare like never before with its final production of the season, Pericles, which opens March 5 and runs through March 15, 2009. Performances are Tuesday through Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday matinee at 2 p.m. in the Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Performing Arts Center, Studio Theatre.

Pericles, one of Shakespeare’s last plays, was among the most popular produced by the King’s Men at the Globe Theatre. It was only after his death that the play fell into disrepute. It was briefly revived after the Restoration, and then all but disappeared from the world’s stages until the mid-twentieth century.

FIU Theatre’s Pericles is a timeless tale infused with a modern twist including reggae, pop music, belly dancing and ingenious stage effects. The production retells Shakespeare’s story by a group of kids who escape a terrible storm by breaking into an old Victorian/Caribbean home. When they encounter a mysterious old book they are enchanted into performing Shakespeare. Directed by associate professor of Theatre Wayne Robinson Jr., Pericles tells the true relation of the whole history, adventures and fortunes of the said Prince.

Robinson, born in Alabama, has acted and directed more than 60 productions. He is passionate about teaching and directing his students.

“What excites me about teaching theatre students are those hard-earned moments in class when an actor suddenly has a realization that changes everything-when somehow, magically they get it,” he said. Robinson recently received an award for Excellence in Directing from the Kennedy Center American Theatre College Festival for his direction of Electricidad, performed at FIU in the Fall 2008 semester.

Tickets are $10 for students, alumni, seniors and $12 for general admission.

The Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Performing Arts Center is located on the University Park Campus, 10910 SW 8th Street, Miami, FL 33199.
