Four-day Summer Schedule

As communicated earlier this week by President Modesto A. Maidique, the university will once again adopt the four-day work week this summer. Effective June 19 through July 31, 2009, the modified summer schedule is returning by popular demand.

“A [university-wide survey] indicated that almost 80 percent of employees requested that we implement this initiative again,” said Maidique.

Employees answering the survey gave three primary reasons for wanting to see the return of the summer schedule: increased savings on gas and tolls, a better work-life balance, and increased savings to the university. Indeed, FIU saved approximately $250,000 last summer with the four-day work week. Since last summer’s trial run, the Summer Schedule Task Force has identified additional areas where savings can be achieved.

Employees will work a 10-hour, four-days-a-week schedule for seven weeks. FIU will continue to meet daily operational needs and provide the same level of customer service while on this modified schedule.

The university will return to its normal operating schedule on Aug. 3, 2009.

TimeSaver Enhancements

Some employees may have questions regarding recent upgrades that were made to the ADP TimeSaver system. In short, the functionality of the system remains the same. What has changed is that employees and managers may now add, edit, delete and approve time/leave entries on the same screen.
