Carlos Santiago withdraws from race for FIU presidency

In a late-breaking development, Carlos Santiago, one of two remaining finalists for the FIU presidency, has withdrawn his name from consideration for the position.

The Board of Trustees Presidential Search Committee subsequently voted to recommend to the full Board of Trustees (BOT) Mark Rosenberg, former chancellor of the State University System and former FIU provost, for the presidency of FIU.

Santiago notified the Board of Trustees Presidential Search Committee of his decision at approximately 9:30 a.m. through representatives from Greenwood/Asher, the search firm hired to oversee the search process.

“Wow, that’s a shocker,” said David Parker, chair of the Presidential Search Committee and chair of the full Board of Trustees.

The full BOT will meet at 11:30 a.m. to make its final decision.

A press conference will immediately follow the meeting of the full BOT.

Full statement from Carlos Santiago:

“After a great deal of thought, I am withdrawing my name from consideration for the presidency of Florida International University.  While I enjoyed my many meetings with the faculty, staff and students at FIU, I have decided to continue the important work that we have started at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.  I want to thank the FIU community for their hospitality and wish them well in the future.  I would also like to thank my colleagues and friends in Milwaukee who have shown such tremendous support for me and my family during this process.  I look forward to continuing our efforts to make UW-Milwaukee a driving force in regional economic development.”
