FIU’s Danny Pino returns to Miami to perform a leading role in Actor’s Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre

A stellar cast that includes FIU alumnus Danny Pino takes to the stage in Havana Bourgeois, a much-anticipated Florida regional theatre debut. Havana Bourgeois is set in Cuba from 1958-1960 and explores the impact of Fidel Castro’s Revolution on the Cuban middle class. This play follows the lives of the employees of a Havana-based advertising agency during the island’s transition from capitalism to communism. The creative team at the agency is forced to forgo their usual clients and instead pitch a revolution that will turn their lives upside down.

Starring in the Actors’ Playhouse production are two actors more than familiar to American television audiences. FIU alumnus Danny Pino portrays the leading character Alberto Varela, a talented, aspiring art director at the Havana-based ad agency. Pino is an American actor of Cuban descent, currently appearing in the CBS TV series Cold Case. His passion earned him a theater scholarship to FIU, where he played leading roles in a score of dramatic and musical productions. Pino was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and graduated from FIU in 1996.

Tony Plana will be featured as Alberto’s mentor at the agency, Ponchito Morales. Plana currently stars as Ignacio Suarez, the widowed father of Ugly Betty, in ABC’s landmark, groundbreaking hit series for which he received the 2006 Golden Satellite Award from the International Press Academy and an Alma Award nomination for best supporting actor in a television comedy.

Playwright Carlos Lacámara wrote this new, nine-character drama, revealing the decay of Cuba under Castro, inspired by his own father’s escape from the island.
