FIYou profile: Lissette O. Hernandez

Name: Lissette O. Hernandez

Hometown: La Habana, Cuba

Job Title/Department: Assistant Director, Parking and Transportation

Campus: University Park

In a nutshell (job description): Oversees clerical and fiscal operations in the department, along with budget management and development.

Number of years at FIU: 13 years and 9 months

What do you enjoy most about your job? Implementing new systems, learning new things and interacting with co-workers, FIU colleagues and the outside community.

What do you think faculty/staff/students should know about your department? Our fees help keep the campus lit, build sidewalks where most needed to help pedestrian traffic, build garages. We strive to promote a safe environment on our campuses while enforcing university rules and regulations.

You’re coordinator of the volunteers for annual Commencement exercises. Why do you do it? What do you enjoy about it? I have always enjoyed planning and organizing, and when I was recommended for this job, I saw the opportunity to exercise those skills. I enjoy the interaction that I have with the students, family members and faculty and staff that attend commencement. It has also helped me improve my customer-service skills.

Where is your favorite spot on campus? Why? The bridge between the library and business school. I don’t get to pass by that area much since my office is in the Gold Garage, but when the parking office used to be located on that side of campus, I loved passing by there, looking at the lake and the turtles or just enjoying a peaceful, quiet lunch at the gazebo near it.

If there’s one thing you wish everyone knew about FIU, what would it be? FIU employees are very dedicated and committed to the university.

Family snapshot: My husband Rey and I have a baby girl, Samantha, who is 21 months old. I have a son Christopher, who is 10 years old, from my previous marriage and a stepdaughter Jossilyn, who is 13 years old, from my husband’s previous marriage. Our family reminds me of the movie Yours, Mine and Ours, although on a much lower scale. My mom, dad, brother and grandmother all live in Miami.

Word that best describes you: Perfectionist.

First paying job: I started working when I was 15 years old at a day care near my house in Madrid, Spain.

Favorite TV show: House

Your proudest accomplishment: My family and job

What do you do when you’re not working at FIU? Spend time with my family either at the park or on trips. I like to read and go to the movies and go dancing. I would love to take tango classes someday.
