Prospective medical students preview FIU College of Medicine

Fourteen prospective members of Florida International University’s inaugural College of Medicine class spent a day meeting professors and touring the facilities where they will be receiving hands-on clinical experience.

The students, all of whom have been accepted to FIU’s College of Medicine, came to FIU-University Park on March 27. FIU President Modesto A. Maidique, College of Medicine Dean Dr. John A. Rock and College of Medicine professors welcomed them and gave them an overview of the areas they will be exploring as medical students, including science, research and professional development. FIU medical students also will participate in the NeigborhoodHELP program, through which they will work with underserved families in Miami-Dade.

The students’ revisit included a tour of the Michael Gordon Center for Research in Medical Education, where FIU medical students will receive training in clinical skills. There, the prospective students met Harvey, a high tech cardiopulmonary patient simulator. The group later toured Jackson North Medical Center in North Miami Dade, where FIU’s students will receive most of their clinical training.

The College of Medicine’s first class will be made up of 43 students, chosen from an applicant pool of 3,332, and will begin classes in August.
