The reinvention tour

BFA student project

As part of her graduating project, Bachelor of Fine Arts student Izlia Fernandez installed this intriguing house on the lake behind the Frost Art Museum.

Fernandez’s father began building the structure as a playhouse for her sister more than 10 years ago. Unfortunately, when he completed it, her sister had lost interest. The house sat on the family property unused for a decade.

Years later, the structure inspired Fernandez to write a short story about a house on stilts that one day comes to life and goes on a journey. The essay then inspired her senior art project.

“I became interested in things that had a purpose that had never been fulfilled,” said Fernandez of her muse.

Fernandez’s family helped her rebuild the house at University Park. They installed solar-powered lights and a drawbridge through which visitors can enter the house.

Fernandez’s complete project, which includes stop-motion animation, will be part of this year’s BFA Spring exhibition, “Wake,” a show featuring the work of 14 students. The exhibit will be on display at the Frost Art Museum until May 10.
