Employees play pivotal role in helping FIU weather challenging economic times

By remembering the quick, simple measures outlined in this checklist, you can help the university reduce operating costs.

The upcoming 4/10 Summer Schedule, which begins on June 19, 2009, presents a great opportunity for everyone at FIU to pitch in and do their part to reduce energy consumption and operating costs.  Here are some simple things you can do that will add up to savings for the university:

  • Lighting – Turn off all lights when you are leaving your office or any room. Don’t forget to turn off nonessential and decorative lighting, especially in unoccupied areas.
  • Computers – Turn off your computer at the end of the day rather than keeping it on or in stand-by mode. If you can’t shut down the computer, turn off the monitor and printers.
  • Equipment/Appliances – Turn off all other equipment such as network printers, scanners, photocopiers, shredders, radios, etc. in your area and unplug all chargers when not in use (ex: cell phone chargers).
  • Thermostat – If you have a thermostat in your area, adjust the temperature to 75° degrees or higher.
  • Personal Printers – Print only what is necessary. There are many ways to store documents electronically – on your computer, CD, memory keys, email folders, etc. Thinking before you print can help reduce costs associated with supplies. If you must print, remember – print double sided. Whenever possible, send to a department printer.
  • Refrigeration – Defrost refrigerators regularly to avoid ice build-up.
  • Blinds/windows/doors -Keep closed, whenever possible.

Your concerted efforts to support simple, cost-saving ideas such as these make a real difference. Thank you in advance for your commitment to promoting efficiency at FIU.

If you have any questions or ideas regarding energy savings, please do not hesitate to contact the Division of Human Resources at 305-348-2181 or via email to HR@fiu.edu

Have a safe and pleasant summer.
