FIYou - Denis Moreira

Name: Denis Moreira ’07

Hometown: Miami, Fla.

Job Title/Department: Broadcast Coordinator, Broadcast Video Productions

Campus: Modesto A. Maidique Campus

In a nutshell: I serve the video and technological needs of our university. My responsibilities cover the entire gamut of video production, from brainstorming, coming up with scripts, being a videographer and also editing the raw video into a finished product that is then distributed on the Web, television or viewed at special events.

Number of years at FIU: 18 months.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Watching students who know absolutely nothing about video breathe a big sigh of relief when they realize we are here to help them turn a bunch of raw video into a polished video they can be proud of and turn it in to their professor for a good grade.

What do you think faculty/staff and students should know about your department?

We are a full-service video production company located in the heart of the university, the Green Library. Our team members are diversely skilled across the board and we take pride in our work. If there’s a big event going on at either campus, we’re there to capture it. We also specialize in streaming video over the Internet, provide video duplication services and are handling FIU’s site on iTunes U. In addition, we provide students with top of the line editing computers to help them complete their video projects for class.

Where is your favorite spot on campus? Why?

I like to end my day with a strong workout at the Rec Center because aside from the health benefits of exercising, it’s a great place to relieve stress and relax. A lot of times I find myself coming up with creative ideas that I later incorporate into my work.

If there is one thing you wish everyone knew about FIU, what would it be?

This university has a very strong presence in the community and with the additions of the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, College of Law, and an up-and-coming football team, FIU’s only going to get stronger. The sky is really the limit for FIU and as an alumnus (I have a bachelor’s in mass communication) and once-again student, I can’t wait to see what the future holds.

Family snapshot:

I was born in Nicaragua, but arrived in Miami at the age of 2. I’m the oldest of three children and the first to graduate college in my immediate family. My mother and father have been married for more than 22 years and still going strong. I love them all dearly.

Word that best describes you: Confident.

First paying job: Bag boy at a local supermarket. Not impressive, but it taught me to work hard and strive to achieve bigger and better things.

Favorite TV show: The show about nothing: “Seinfeld.” I’ve never seen a dull episode – it’s comedic genius.

Your proudest accomplishment:

Being nominated for an Emmy when I worked for the Miami Heat during the 2006 season, which ended with them winning the championship. I edited videos into the wee hours of the morning on an almost daily basis and was able to see that hard work pays off, which is something that is priceless.

What do you do when you are not working at FIU?

I like to play basketball and ever since I learned how to swim just a few years ago, I can’t keep away from the water – my friends think I’ve turned into Aquaman! I continue to stay on my toes about the never-ending improvements and breakthroughs in video production and technology as a whole. Also, I’m working on my master’s degree in public health, so I spend a lot of time studying and writing papers.
