FIU brings international talent to the music stage


The 2009-’10 FIU Music season promises more than 50 performances with diverse repertoires and styles, including classical, jazz, choral music, new media and opera.

(J) Davidovici and GekicPerformances will feature renowned artists like Kemal Gekic and Robert Davidovici, distinguished faculty, including Chair of FIU Music David Dolata, and talented students on their way to becoming young stars on the international music stage.

Through the many concerts and recitals scheduled for performance in the Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Performing Arts Center at Modesto A. Maidique, a wide variety of ensembles and soloists promise to keep their audiences enthralled.

Ensembles include the FIU Symphony Orchestra, led by distinguished visiting conductor Huifang Chen, a longtime Miami resident; the Florida Laptop and Electronic Arts Ensemble, presenting newly commissioned electro-acoustic works; the New Music Ensemble, specializing in the performance of contemporary chamber, experimental and electronic music; and the Collegium Musicum, focusing on pre-classical eras including medieval, renaissance and baroque often performed in the original instruments.

Other featured ensembles and performances include opera theater, concert choir and wind ensemble.

“In this significant year for Mendelssohn and Haydn, we are going to celebrate with performances of the “Violin Concerto” with the FIU Symphony Orchestra and chamber works with the FIU Chamber Player Series, among others,” said professor Robert Davidovici. “We are also celebrating the renewal and affirmation of the multi-faceted vitality of FIU Music.”

Performances will takes place in the Wertheim Performing Arts Center’s Concert and Recital halls at MMC. Tickets are available in premium and standard music performance prices with discounts for seniors and FIU students, faculty/staff and alumni.
