The FIU football team kick-started its 2009 campaign on Aug. 10 at FIU Stadium by checking out the new locker rooms at the R. Kirk Landon Fieldhouse and taking the field out of the stadium’s southwest tunnel for the first practice of the fall season.

Head Coach Mario Cristobal ran his Golden Panthers through a variety of drills during their two-hour practice. Highlights of the first day of training camp included a couple of impressive catches by JuCo transfer TE Dudley LaPorte, who showed off his size, speed and agility throughout the first day.

On defense, Pooh Bear Mars got his first collegiate practice under his belt and could be seen as a potential leader on defense with senior LB Scott Bryant. Practice ended with 110-yard sprints down the field.

“There’s some competition out here that’s legitimate,” Cristobal said at the end of the day. “I think that everyone is feeling it. Again, today’s progress is due to a great off-season.

“It showed in the way we’re running around, in our discipline, our efficiency and our execution.”

Football camp will continue for the rest of the week. All practices this week are open to the public. Fans attending should enter FIU Stadium through Gate One.

Season tickets for football, as well as a fall sports packages for men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball and other sports, are now available.
