Name: Laura Probst

Hometown: Worthington, Minn.

Job Title/Department: Dean of Libraries

Campus: Modesto A. Maidique and Biscayne Bay Campuses

In a nutshell: I have administrative responsibility for all library operations in the Green Library and the Biscayne Bay Library. I work closely with the library faculty and staff to ensure that the library meets the needs of our students and faculty. I am also the library’s primary ambassador to the broader community, working with donors and other libraries in Florida and beyond.

Number of years at FIU: Almost two years.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I like working with the many people I encounter every day – my colleagues in the library, university staff and faculty, donors and students. I’m fortunate to have lots of variety in my work. I never know what adventures await when I arrive at work in the morning.

What do you think faculty/staff and students should know about your department?

Librarians are cool.

Where is your favorite spot on campus? Why?

I have two: At MMC, it’s the west-facing windows on the 8th floor of the Green Library – the sunsets are wonderful. At BBC, it’s the shoreline. After living in land-locked parts of the country for most of my life, I love to sit and look out over the bay.

If there is one thing you wish everyone knew about FIU, what would it be?

The students are impressive!

Family snapshot:

I’m single and enjoy “favorite aunt” status among my nieces and nephews.

Word that best describes you: Workaholic.

First paying job: Locker room attendant.

Favorite TV show: “Mystery!”

Your proudest accomplishment:

My 25-year career as a church organist.

What do you do when you are not working at FIU?

I cook and I travel. I like to collect shells and beach glass.
