Hundreds celebrate Maidique, welcome Rosenberg

In an afternoon filled with accolades, personal reminiscences and best wishes, FIU said goodbye to one president and welcomed another at a tribute to Modesto A. Maidique on Aug. 3 in the U.S. Century Bank Arena at the newly renamed Modesto A. Maidique Campus.

Local, state and national elected officials marked the occasion with proclamations and awards. Brothers Lincoln and Mario Diaz-Balart, members of Congress and long-time advocates of FIU, presented Maidique with a flag that had been flown over the U.S. Capitol in his honor. FIU deans marked the occasion with eloquent words of thanks and presented Dr. and Mrs. Maidique with a painting for their new home.

A tribute video looking back on Maidique’s career and featuring archival footage as well as interviews with present and former co-workers rendered FIU’s only president emeritus “speechless.” Maidique looked visibly moved by the afternoon’s events.
