MIAMI – The car wash service at Modesto A. Maidique Campus has been temporarily discontinued. The university will solicit bids for a new service provider.
A.C.C. Car Wash, Inc. started the service in March as a pilot program, which expanded from one to two locations on campus – Gold and Red garages. The service quickly gained popularity.
“Knowing that the university community welcomed this type of service, we already have begun the formal process of soliciting bids,” said Assistant Vice President Business Services Jeff Krablin. “We are eager to resume this affordable and convenient service and expect to have it up and running in October.”
The process could take a few months, but Krablin said he expects to resume service as quickly as possible.
The spots formerly used by the car wash service in both garages will revert back to useable parking spaces until a new company is selected.
Companies interested in providing the service should check the Office of Procurement Services website regularly for updates on this competitive solicitation. If you have any about this process, please contact Kenia Duranoma, manager of competitive solicitations and contracts, at 305-348-1242.
I believe the next provider should be an environmentally friendly one. Seeing how protecting the environment is a main point in the FIU mission statement how how short the supply of freshwater is in south Florida, I don't see any reason why we shouldn't choose a provider responsibly. Biodegradable soap is a necessity, but water free would be AMAZING!
I for one am HAPPY to see the car wash gone. When I pay over $400 for an administrative tag and STILL have to drive around for over 30 minutes to find a spot if I arrive after 10AM, having a car wash using valuable parking spots is ridiculous. This is an insult to students, faculty and staff. I encourage all who agree with me NOT to use the car wash. I will NEVER use it.
Has anyone at the department of parking wondered of the ethical question of forcing our hard-working and sometimes financially strained students to use the car-wash because they cannot find another place to park? Students have already commented to me that they have used the car wash because it is cheaper than paying a ticket, and not because they want to wash their cars. This may be the secret to the car-wash so-called "success". Is it ethical to direct student funds to some private business, so that they can be on time for their exams and classes? Moreover, is it ethical , to use forida taxpayers money, which were used for building the garages, for a private business to make money, while at the same time the students are frustrated and being involved in accidents, anxious to find parking? It was a shameful decision to install the car wash, and I had thought that FIU parking and traffic came to its senses and got rid of it! But alas!
At last, department of parking and traffic, please do the right thing for faculty and student morale, at this university, and get rid of the car wash for good!
