“Sports Illustrated” has picked senior advertising student Vanessa Marrero as its Cheerleader of the Week.
Marrero, who led FIU’s Golden Dazzlers as captain in 2008, is on her fourth year on the team. She tells the magazine she “always planned on going to FIU” and shares that her most embarrassing moment happened during her rookie year.
“We were on the sidelines at a game,” she said. “My team started a dance a routine while I just stood there distracted and not dancing.”
Gooooo Vane! Love you, so proud!!
She isnt a cheerleader… so why would they honor her for being one?
Very beautiful woman!
Awesome! National recognition for a program that the higher ups targeted to eliminate. Great to see the FIU Cheerleading Program in the national spotlight.
Congrats Vanessa!
Vanessa is a Dazzler which is the official dance of FIU. They cut the cheerleading program at FIU not the Dazzlers. Although they do not cheer and instead they dance on the sidelines, I don't find anything wrong with being honored as a "cheerleader" on Sports Illustrated. The Dazzlers can be easily compared the Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders which in fact do not cheer at all. They actually have the same kick-line choreography and pose identically to the dolphin Cheerleaders while the team is playing and the girls are not dancing. I don't agree with the cuts for the Cheerleading team, but I do not feel the need to be hostile towards a supporter of FIU. The Dazzlers work very hard to support FIU and are always representing the university with class. There is no need to be rude.
She isnt a cheerleader. she is a dazzler. That is why the whole thing is even more messed up.
Here's a thought: How 'bout if we all just be happy that a student from FIU was selected?
the cheerleaders got reinstated so its even more of a slap in the face for the cheerleaders to “honor” a college dancer as a cheerleader when infact she is not a cheerleader and there still are REAL FIU cheerleaders. Professional sports are completely different than college sports. You cant compare professional cheerleaders to college cheerleaders. Being a college cheerleader takes talent and skills. shaking your butt half naked takes no athletic ability what so ever. Im sorry i think its insulting to FIU’s NATIONALLY ranked cheerleading program.
I'm sorry this is horrible. After all the problems FIU put the cheerleading team through, they're going to have a DANCER pose as a CHEERLEADER??! They don't call football players basketball players, and they don't call soccer players baseball players. This is ridiculous. Even is sports illustrated didn't know any better, if I was a dancer I won't not want to pose as a cheerleader when cleary I am not. I bet if sports illustrated walked up to a football player and said we want to make you basketball player of the week? He would NOT do it…why? Because he is not a basketball player. This just looks bad on everyone's part, especially when FIU DOES have a REAL cheerleader team, and they are talented. It's a reason why they got 4th in the nation. The dancers aren't even a SPORT! I just can't believe this.
Take a look at the rest of the SI cheerleaders of the week…they are not all cheerleaders. Should all the other schools be outraged too? They still support their team at the games on the same sidelines as the cheerleaders. Not a big deal. Congrats, Vanessa! Hope to keep seeing you in the spotlight!
This makes me laugh…..
