Dr. Garth Graham ’97, deputy assistant secretary for minority health, to speak about challenges and opportunities in health reform


Dr. Garth Graham, Department of Health and Human Services’ deputy assistant secretary of minority health, will speak at FIU Oct. 29 as part of the Honors College’s Fall 2009 Excellence Lecture series. Graham’s topic will be “Health Care for Underserved communities: Challenges and Opportunities in Health Reform.”

ggraham.jpgA 1997 graduate of the Honors College, Graham is on the faculty of Harvard Medical School where he trained in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and serves as a visiting scientist at the Harvard School of Public Health. He has authored scientific articles and presentations on cardiovascular disease, HIV/AIDS and community medicine.

Graham graduated cum laude from Yale School of Medicine. He also earned a master’s in public health from the Yale School of Epidemiology and Public Health with a focus in health policy administration. He has received numerous awards for his leadership and service in promoting health and is the founder of the Boston Men’s Cardiovascular Health Project, a project that seeks to identify why there is decreased adherence to adequate diet and exercise among African American men.

The event is free and open to the public and will take place from 3:30-4:45 p.m. in the College of Business Complex, Room 155. A reception will follow.
