FIU’s response to the flu
This page is intended to provide information to the entire FIU community regarding the flu, including the H1N1 virus.
FIU’s Office of Emergency Management and Student Health Services are working with the Miami-Dade County Health Department and the university’s Emergency Management Group to prepare for the detection and management of the flu. FIU has assembled an H1N1 Special Assignment Group comprised of individuals from across the university who meet regularly to discuss updates, logistics of vaccination and procedural recommendations.
Below are links to Web sites that provide in-depth information about the flu as well as the H1N1 virus, specifically:
Office of Emergency Management
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
Centros para del Control y la Prevencion de Enfermedades (CDC)
Below is a link to a memo from Human Resources reminding FIU employees of university policy and advising them of action in the event they think they have the flu.
In April, Dean of the Robert Stempel College of Public Health and Social Work Fernando Trevino answered questions from members of the university community on the Swine Flu and discussed simple prevention measures such as hand washing techniques.

Yes good information, Now The main point… In keeping with the presidents theme of Hit the ground running… I propose that FIU install no less than two Instant Hand Santizers in each and every restroom. Con(s) to this 1st is the initial cost of the (Quality) dispencer(s) – One time cost! 2nd FTE for the installation(s) – Again a one time cost! 3rd and I feel lastly, Replentishment, – done via already alloted Utility staff.(However see 5th in Pro’s for this) Pro’s to this… (which can actually be quantified…) 1st Water waist, Weather you have automated sensors or even worse typical faucet turn on sinks most if not all antibacterial soaps recomend at least 20 seconds of lathering for a beneficial result! 2nd Time for this lathering… (students going to class, Faculity also and Staff back to work) 3rd Less ware and tare of Hand drying systems, & to a lesser degree paper towel usage. 4th Reduced purchasing of individual dispensors within each department due to the fact that the mindset is “I just sanatized them no need to do it again so soon” 5th The actual sanatizer can be purchased in Bulk (If directly from a manufacturer the cost is further reduced, “No middle man cost”) OH and in keeping with the Direct dealer… Possibly include the Installation!?! In summary this keeps FIU as a whole germ free and on the move!!! & for the community FIU’s commitment to conservation efforts and the “green” theme! Thank You for your time and concederation of this proposal. DJH (PS I hated english/spelling so forgiveness is requested for any errors in that arena LOL)
