Free agent and former Golden Panther Carlos Arroyo signed a one-year non-guarantee contract with the Miami Heat on Oct. 12.

Arroyo, who will wear number 8, told the Palm Beach Post Monday that he had wanted to play for the Heat since college.

The seven-year NBA veteran returns to the court after a year off. In the 2008-09 season, he played for Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Israeli Basketball Super League, winning the league’s championship and being named the final’s Most Valuable Player.

Arroyo, a 6-foot-2 point guard, was the second player in FIU basketball history to score at least 1,600 career points. He set school records in assists (459) and steals (177).

The Puerto Rican native lead the Puerto Rican Men’s National Team to a bronze medal in the Olympic qualifying tournament in 2003.
