News@FIU debuts new alumni section

The FIU community can now read stories about the latest alumni happenings at News@FIU, the university’s centralized news Web site.

The new alumni section of News@FIU is a collaboration between FIU’s alumni and communication offices. It will be updated regularly to include features about successful graduates, videos and story coverage of alumni special events, previews of events and valuable news for alumni. The section will also include the “FIU Alumni Spotlight,” a Q&A-style interview with a graduate.

The stories will complement the wealth of alumni information available at the Alumni Association Web site.

“With this new addition, we will be sharing alumni news with the entire FIU community, while also reaching out to our alumni through the university’s most popular communication vehicle,” said Alumni Associate Executive Director Duane Wiles. “This represents one more way that the university is working to build a strong FIU community of alumni, current students, faculty, staff and their families.”

At News@FIU, alumni can also learn about the latest university news and events. The Web site, launched in January, has already earned a robust following with an average 30,000-40,000 unique visitors per month.

“We’re pleased to expand News@FIU to include alumni,” said Editorial Services Director Karen Cochrane, who supervises News@FIU for the Division of External Relations. “Our FIU graduates are an important part of the university community. We want them to feel connected to their alma mater and make it easy for them to get latest news from the university and the Alumni Association.”

The debut of Alumni News@FIU brings the story of alumnus Dean Wheeler, who recently returned from Moldova where he collaborated with grape growers in the Farmer-to-Farmer program. Alumni can also submit candidates to be considered for the 2010 Torch Awards and read up on this year’s Silver Pride Reunion for the Class of 1984 during Homecoming. Check out the stories here.
