FIYou: Sky Jarrett ’07

FIYou - Sky Jarrett

Name: Sky Jarrett ’07

Hometown: Kingston, Jamaica

Job Title/Department: Director of Administrative Services, Athletics

Campus: Modesto A. Maidique Campus

In a nutshell: My role primarily involves serving as the Human Resources coordinator/liaison for the department, as well as handling other special projects such as preparing for the university’s SACS Reaccreditation and NCAA Recertification.

Number of years at FIU: Three years as an employee. I am also a proud alumna who joined the FIU family four years ago.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I mostly enjoy the opportunity that I have to impact the personal and professional development of the many interns that serve in our department each semester by coaching and mentoring them during their experience with us.

What do you think faculty/staff and students should know about your department?

In addition to continually striving for athletic distinction, Athletics is committed to the comprehensive development of our student-athletes and values the visibility that our sports programs bring to the university at large.

Where is your favorite spot on campus? Why?

My favorite spot on campus would have to be the east concourse in the football stadium overlooking the entire campus and Miami skyline. If you haven’t been to FIU Stadium, you should take a tour or better yet, attend one of our upcoming football games.

What is one thing you wish everyone knew about FIU?

There’s so much I want to share – our accomplishments, our goals, how many people we’ve touched. If I had to narrow it down to one thing, I would say that FIU is making great strides to becoming one of the most recognized universities not only in this nation but also internationally. We will be a force to be reckoned with and the school to be affiliated with.

Family snapshot:

I am the middle child of five (two sisters and two brothers). We are a very close-knit family that enjoys spending time together and establishing new family traditions.

Word that best describes you: Dynamic.

First paying job: When I was 14, I worked as the receptionist at a spa in Jamaica over the Christmas holidays.

Favorite TV show: “24”

Your proudest accomplishment:

I am most proud of the successful implementation of a juvenile delinquency prevention program that I worked with the City of Fort Lauderdale to establish. This program was developed for at-risk youth within the Fort Lauderdale community to provide hands-on interaction with youth to enhance their mental health, social skills, academic competence and self-esteem.

What do you do when you are not working at FIU?

I really enjoy traveling and look forward to attending carnival celebrations in various islands of the Caribbean. I also enjoy spending time with my family and close friends, salsa dancing and, of course, going to the beach.
