CNN anchor and special correspondent for CNN: Special Investigations Unit Soledad O’Brien will make an appearance at FIU on Tuesday, Oct. 27, as part of the SGA Lecture Series.
O’Brien will speak on the topic of diversity in the media.
The lecture is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in GC 140 at Modesto A. Maidique Campus.
I wish I could attend the SGA lecture series (all of them), but the distance from Arizona is too great to get there after my work day! Soledad O’Brien has millions of “fans”, including yours truly, and is certainly an able presenter regarding the diversity issues that are a part of everyday life in America. We here in Maricopa County live in the shadow of an infamous Sheriff who persists in racial profiling, assuming that if you “look” like an Hispanic person, you deserve to be pulled over and rousted. “Sheriff Joe” takes pleasure exhibiting his trademark “in your face” attitude to any media that he can get in front of. Amazingly, many Phoenix voters have continued to support a character of that ilk, based on their own inability to deal with the existent and growing diversity of the USA. As Arizona’s population changes – and it is changing rapidly – most residents of this beautiful state will realize that America was built on immigrant’s contributions throughout its history. The diversity of our citizenry will continue to be one of the greatest strengths of our country. – Bill Sullivan FIU Class of ’76
