FIU-educated teachers outperform counterparts in preparing students for the FCAT
Teachers who graduated from Florida International University’s College of Education had a higher success rate when it came to their students’ FCAT scores than those who graduated from any other public university or community college in the state, according to a Florida Department of Education report released Thursday.
According to the report, 85 percent of FIU graduates succeeded in having more than half of their students achieve learning gains in reading and math on the 2007-2008 Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test. FIU graduates led the state in a second FCAT category measured by the DOE: 23 percent of students taught by Golden Panther alumni were classified as “high performing.”
“This report validates our approach to educating excellent teachers who, in turn, run high performing classrooms,” said College of Education Interim Dean Marie McDemmond. “We continue to adopt the latest educational techniques to ensure that our graduates remain on the cutting edge of their field and are ready to prepare students to succeed even beyond FCAT.”
