FIU presents lecture on Turkey’s role in the Middle East and accession efforts into the EU

WHAT: Strategically located at the crossroads of two continents, Turkey plays a unique role in regional and global politics.  Turkey is not only an important ally of the United States but is also a diplomatic conduit to such countries as Syria and Iran.  Just recently Ankara was actively involved in Syrian-Israeli peace talks.  For quite some time now, Turkey has also been a contender for European Union membership.  FIU’s Middle East Society will present a lecture by Soner Cagaptay entitled “Between East and West: Turkey’s Role in the Middle East and European Union Accession Efforts.”  The event is co-presented with FIU’s European Studies Program, the Miami-Florida European Union Center of Excellence, the Florida Turkish American Association, and FIU’s Student Government Association.

His writings have appeared in major international print media, including Wall Street Journal, Washington Times, Los Angeles Times, International Herald Tribune, Jane’s Defense Weekly, and Newsweek Türkiye.  He also is a regular columnist for Hürriyet Daily News, Turkey’s oldest and most influential English-language paper.  He appears regularly on Fox News, CNN, NPR, Voice of America, al-Jazeera, BBC, CNN-Turk, and al-Hurra.
