FIU, UF & Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz teamed up prior to the UF-FIU football game as part of an initiative to promote awareness regarding breast cancer. Fifteen FIU students traveled to Gainesville to participate, leaving campus at 3 a.m. for the trip. Everyone enjoyed interacting with Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz, FIU alumni, UF staff and students and, of course, attending the game (FIU lost 62-3). Coaches and players sported pink towels and ribbons and the initiative’s logo was displayed on the big screen at half time.

In addition to the efforts mentioned above, I also want to point out that the football players and coaching staff made their own personal efforts as well in honor of my mother who is in the fight against breast cancer. Each player wore a pink ribbon on the left side of their helmet and the coaches and staff wore a pink ribbon on their left sleeve signifying the breast in which her cancer was detected. It was such a simple but kind gesture that truly epitomizes the heart of these men.
Thanks FIU Football and Go Panthers!!
That's beautiful, Sky. May your mother be safe and well. Honestly, I really don't care if our team wins games or not (and I'm a season ticket holder who actually attend the games). When I hear anecdotes like that it makes me proud of this team.
Sky, my thoughts and prayers are with your mother and your family.
My mother is also in the fight against breast cancer and the gesture made by the FIU Football team and staff reached out to my family, and I am sure to other families in our community. We can never underestimate the great impact a small gesture can have on someone, and I am thankful that these players and staff took this into consideration by wearing a pink ribbon to signify where cancer was detected on Sky's mother. It makes me proud to be part of the FIU family as a student and employee.
Go Panthers!!!
