FIU invites community to teach-in on Haiti


MIAMI – Florida International University is encouraging members of the South Florida community to attend a “teach-in” on Haiti that will bring together top FIU experts and other specialists on Haiti and issues related to the aftermath of natural disasters.

“Crisis in Haiti: An FIU Teach-In” is scheduled from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010 at the Graham Center Ballrooms, located on FIU’s Modesto Maidique Campus, 11200 SW 8th Street.

Presenters will answer questions and explore topics such as immigration, relief and recovery efforts, what role Haitians in the U.S. will play in Haiti’s future, and how to maximize community efforts to aid Haiti.

The discussion, organized by the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA), will include:

  • Grenville Draper (Department of Earth & Environment)
  • Richard Olson (Department of Politics & International Relations, SIPA)
  • Jessy Devieux (Stempel School of Public Health)
  • Troy Elder (College of Law)
  • Alex Stepick (Department of Global and Sociocultural Studies, SIPA)
  • Jean Claude Garcia Zamor (Department of Public Administration, SIPA)
  • Daniel Tosado (Assistant Superintendent, Miami-Dade County Public schools)
  • Leonie Hermantin (Lambi Fund)

Additional FIU faculty experts will field questions and provide commentary.

The teach-in is free and open to the public. Members of the Haitian community are especially invited to participate. The teach-in will be webcast live.
