Get ready to kayak with FIU

For years, the Recreation Department at Biscayne Bay Campus (BBC) has provided Panthers, faculty/staff, their families and friends with a fun Saturday-thing-to-do during Miami’s (mostly) warm winter days: Kayak Days on the Bay.

Held every last Saturday of the month, Kayak Days begin at 10 a.m. – participants meet by the water behind the Bay Vista Aquatic Center at BBC – with excursions through Oleta River State Park’s kayaking trails. Trips generally run from 90 minutes to two hours depending upon the size and skill level of the group.

“After completing the trail, we kayak over to a small island to take a short break,” said recreation specialist Jonathan Torrey, “then it’s back to BBC to end the trip.”

The next Kayak Day on the Bay is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 30, at 10 a.m. Groups will then meet on Feb. 27, March 27 and April 24 for the remainder of the spring semester. Admission is free.

Participants are encouraged to wear bathing suits (you will get wet, even if it’s only a little bit); visors or hats; flip-flops, sandals or water shoes (your feet will get wet); and plenty of sunscreen.
