Pic of the Week Dec. 5-12

And this week’s winner is… Eduardo Merille, director of FIU’s marketing and new media.

Merille took the winning photo while out to lunch with colleagues at the Fresh Food Company, known to most Panthers as the cafeteria at Modesto A. Maidique Campus.

His inspiration: In medieval Europe, vendors were permitted to sell their waffles outside of churches on saints’ days and during other special religious celebrations. Competition at the churches eventually became very heated, and at times violent, so that King Charles IX of France imposed a regulation on waffle sales, requiring vendors to maintain a distance of at least deux toises (4 m/12 ft) from one another. “But here at FIU,” Merille said, “you can get as many waffles as you want at the Fresh Foods buffet. FIU FTW.”

To submit your original photo for consideration, send it as an email to floridainternational@yahoo.com by 4 p.m. on Mondays for the following week’s contest. Only pictures that are FIU related and in good taste will be eligible.

The winner is chosen by popular vote (fans vote by “liking” their favorite) on FIU facebook to be featured in the news.FIU.edu media gallery and on facebook. Polls open on Mondays at 6 p.m. and remain open for voting until the following Monday at noon.

The Pic of the Week is announced Mondays at 1:30 p.m.
