Baseball sweeps Maryland in season opener

Sophomore Pablo Bermudez honored as Sun Belt Player of the Week

FIU baseball opened its 2010 season with a perfect 3-0 record, defeating University of Maryland in a weekend series – the team’s first three-game sweep since they defeated Bethune-Cookman in 1999.

The Panthers scored 25 runs over the weekend and hit .361 with 10 doubles and three home runs. All three starting pitchers (Scott Rembisz, Corey Polizzano and Aaron Arboleya) brought home a victory, and the entire pitching staff combined for a 1.00 ERA and 19 punch-outs.

Sophomore Pablo Bermudez was named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week; it is Bermudez’s first SBC nod.

The men return to the diamond Friday, Feb. 26, when they host Oral Roberts for a three-game series. Game times are 7 p.m. on Friday; 6 p.m. on Saturday; and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
