FIU’s Cuban Research Institute presents conference on Cuban and Cuban American Studies

WHAT: Florida International University’s Cuban Research Institute (CRI) will continue its tradition of convening scholars engaged in the study of Cuba and Cuban Americans at its 8th Conference on Cuban and Cuban American Studies.  The theme of the conference, “Cuba 2010: An Island in a Global World,” will focus on the political, economic, cultural and social dynamics on the island and the diaspora. As in the past, the conference will be interdisciplinary and international in scope.  As part of the conference program, on the evening of February 11, there will be a screening of the award-winning documentary “Cuba: El arte de la espera,” about the return of a Cuban exile to his small hometown formerly dominated by the sugar milling operations of the United Fruit Company. Filmmaker Eduardo Lamora will introduce and discuss the film. This screening, co-sponsored by the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Miami, will be the U.S. premiere of the documentary.

WHO: The conference will include more than 140 participants in 31 panels covering a broad range of topics such as literature, cinema, art, history, and social, economic and political issues. Panelists will represent institutions in the United States, Puerto Rico, Spain, France, Mexico, Venezuela and Cuba.
