FIU hosts Univision Education Town Hall Meeting

The following is an open invitation sent by President Mark B. Rosenberg to the FIU community.

In two weeks FIU will host the second public education Town Hall Meeting with the leaders of Miami-Dade College and the Miami-Dade School System. This meeting, organized by Univision Radio, will take place at the Wertheim Performing Arts Center, on MMC, at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010.

I urge each of you to join us.

While the event will be conducted and broadcast live on Spanish language radio (WQBA 1140 AM), simultaneous English interpretation will be available on site. Participants are welcome to ask questions in either language. My fellow panelists at the Town Hall meeting will be Superintendent of Miami-Dade Schools Alberto Carvalho and Miami-Dade College Provost Rolando Montoya as MDC President Eduardo Padron will be traveling and unable to join us. This Town Hall Meeting follows a similar gathering hosted by Dr. Padron last fall, as well as other public forums at which we have been calling for a common platform in support of our educational institutions.

Strategically scheduled right before the start of the legislative session, this Town Hall Meeting – Legislative Agenda 2010 – will focus on funding for public education. We have invited the entire Dade Delegation as well as other elected officials and plan to have an honest and open conversation with them about where the current funding models will take us as a community and discuss some of the alternatives that could lead us on a more prosperous path.

This Town Hall Meeting presents an educational opportunity for many of our students interested in education and public policy, and is an opportunity for the university community to exercise thought leadership and show a consensus on the importance of educational attainment at all levels. This is why I hope students, faculty, staff, alumni and other members of the community will turn out in big numbers for this Town Hall Meeting. It is essential that our elected officials see and feel our community’s commitment to quality K through Ph.D. education.

Please RSVP today  and let us know if you will be taking advantage of the simultaneous interpretation service. RSVP form available at: http://go.fiu.edu/townhall

If you have any questions about this event, please contact our Office of Media Relations at 305-348-2232.

I look forward to seeing you at the WPAC on Feb. 24.

Mark B. Rosenberg
President
