FIU New Music Miami Festival series presents contemporary music and videos

In the midst of the 12th annual New Music Miami International Society of Contemporary Music (ISCM) Festival Series, FIU music continues to impress the FIU and Miami communities with contemporary music and video art.  With only four concerts left in the 2009-2010 season, the festival holds concerts at FIU and other locations in South Miami featuring contemporary music and videos from diverse parts of the world. In collaboration with FIU’s School of Music, The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum, the Spanish Cultural Center, and the Wolfsonian-FIU, the New Music Miami ISCM Festival is one of South Florida’s unique art and culture events.

The festival focuses on chamber, orchestral and electronic music as well as video art from around the world. The compositions are performed by some of the most exciting specialists of contemporary music. This season’s festival holds a total of eight concerts and several pre-concert Meet the Artists sessions.

“It is a great privilege to be able to spend time over the next six months with some of the most innovative composers and artists and some of the best musicians from around the world,” says Orlando Jacinto García, newly appointed chair of the FIU School of Music.

This year’s New Music Miami Festival showcases a variety of ensembles including the NODUS Ensemble, the FIU New Music Ensemble, the FIU Symphony Orchestra, the FIU Symphonic Wind Ensemble, the Amernet String Quartet and the Zagreb-based Cantus Ensemble. Guest performers include flutist Margaret Lancaster and electric violinist Todd Reynolds as well as Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Bernard Rands and guest composers Alfredo Rugeles and Diana Arismendi.

“In addition to being an opportunity for the exchange of ideas, the festival serves as a place where the variety of aesthetic concerns emanating from different parts of the world can be celebrated. It is my hope that our guests and audiences will be enriched spiritually and culturally with the music and ideas expressed in this festival,” says García.
