Nursing & Health Sciences building opens to fanfare

State-of-the-art building is the first LEED-certified structure on campus.

Hundreds of faculty/staff, students, alumni and friends of FIU were on hand Feb. 4 to tour the new College of Nursing & Health Sciences building at Modesto A. Maidique Campus.

The new teaching and research facility encompasses 115,000 square feet of space housing state-of-the-art interactive skills laboratories, extensive computer suites and ample lecture classrooms. After a dedication ceremony, guests explored the third floor Simulation Center (SimCenter) and the fourth floor Rehabilitation Center (RehabCenter). These centers feature an audiology lab, hospital stations, exam rooms and wireless SimDemo mannequins.

Faculty, students and alumni demonstrated surgical laparoscopy and ultrasound procedures, a crash-cart response to a heart attack victim, assisting in a labor and delivery, and more.

The first LEED-certified building on campus, the facility serves all departments of the CNHS: nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, communication sciences & disorder, athletic training, health sciences, and information management.

Liberal Arts student Doug Garland captured the day-long celebration on video.
