FIU Architecture shortlisted for 12th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice

FIU Architecture has been shortlisted by the U.S. Department of State to be the organizing and curatorial entity for the 12th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice, Italy. FIU Architecture’s proposed Biennale theme, titled “Provisional,” was investigated principally by professors Nathaniel Belcher, Elite Kedan and Malik Benjamin. The theme examines recent visionary and innovative projects and proposals by U.S. architects and cultural practitioners whose approach to design is pragmatic, strategic and optimistic. According to FIU Architecture Chair Adam Drisin, through the leveraging of new technologies and the rise of a culture of consultancy, these practices are no longer marginal but are transforming the heart of the profession today.

The “Provisional” exhibition illuminates the four primary methods that define current innovative architectural thinking in America today: parametric design, information modeling/fabrication/construction, performance simulation, and materials research.  “These innovative and complex buildings that were unimaginable a few years ago, can be built because they are now technically possible, but also feasible from a cost/time perspective.  The technological sophistication engenders buildings that are also socially more responsible because many are optimized for ecologically sound parameters while maximizing personal/public comfort,” says Drisin.
