Hometown: I was born in Camaguey, Cuba, but have lived in Miami since the age of 11.

Job Title/Department: Academic and Pre-law Advisor, College of Arts and Sciences Advising Center

Campus: Modesto A. Maidique Campus

In a nutshell: I advise primarily transfer students about the university core curriculum requirements and general College of Arts and Sciences requirements. I have pre-law sessions weekly where I discuss with students the law school admissions process, how to prepare for the LSAT, available grants and scholarships, as well as any other questions they could possibly have regarding law school.

Number of years at FIU: 4 ½

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I have been able to make a difference in the life of every student I have helped, as well as the knowledge shared by those students.

What do you think faculty/staff and students should know about your department?

The College of Arts and Sciences is the heart of FIU. It provides every student enrolled in this university tools that will prepare them to become successful and engaged global citizens.

Where is your favorite spot on campus? Why?

My favorite spot on campus is the Graham Center because it is always filled with positive energy.

If there is one thing you wish everyone knew about FIU, what would it be?

That FIU is a student-centered university that employs the best-qualified staff to assist its students.

Family snapshot:

I live with my parents, my grandma and my 6-year-old baby brother, Adrian. The rest of my family lives in Cuba.

Word that best describes you: Achiever.

First paying job: My first job was when I was 16 in the children’s department at JCPenney at Dadeland Mall.

Favorite TV show: I have many: Lost, Desperate Housewives, Brothers & Sisters, American Idol, V, Modern Family and Medium.

What is playing on your iPod?

My iPod is very diverse. It ranges from pop and R&B, to salsa, merengue and bachata.

Your proudest accomplishment:

I have two. First, having adapted to the culture in the U.S. and learned the language in a short period of time. Second, making my parents proud by continuing my education, making our escape from Cuba on a boat a risk worth taking.

What do you do when you are not working at FIU?

I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, reading, watching TV and listening to music.
