CRUSADA presents lecture on health disparities in Dominican Republic


FIU’s Center for Research on U.S. Latino HIV/AIDS and Drug Abuse is hosting a brown bag lunch about the major health issues facing the Dominican Republic.

Rafael Sánchez Español, director of Hospital Metropolitano de Santiago, will provide epidemiological background and discuss the biological factors influencing health disparities in the Dominican Republic. He will also highlight how social factors can influence health, and talk about the healthcare system that assists approximately one million immigrants from Haiti.

Español is a surgeon and academic who has been involved in numerous national committees for surgical education. He pioneered Laparoscopic and Laser surgery in the Dominican Republic.

The lecture is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. in GL 482 at Modesto A. Maidique Campus.
