Award ceremony topped off Student Employment Week, April 12-16
The FIU family came together at the first annual Student Employee of the Year Awards (SEOTY) April 16 to recognize the contributions of more than 1,800 students who work for the university.
Departments across Biscayne Bay Campus and Modesto A. Maidique Campus nominated members of their teams who go beyond the call of duty and inspire their colleagues. Two American Airlines tickets, a $500 first prize and bragging rights were up for grabs.
Silk-Jazmyne Hindus, who works in Residential Life, took top honors. “I want to thank FIU for the phenomenal memories it has given me throughout the years and the great leader it has developed me into,” said Hindu. “Go student employees!”
“There are so many of our valued professional staff who started here as Work Study students,” said President Mark B. Rosenberg. “They thought they’d get their education and leave, but then stayed and began to give us an education about how to get things done and get them right.”
The SEOTY Awards wrapped up a week of celebrations at universities across the country honoring student employees who are seeking a degree and have chosen their school to gain valuable work experience.

Congratulations to all student employees! Very well deserved. I, myself, have been a student employee for the past three years and know firsthand how hard it is to balance work, school and somehow maintain a social life. Unfortunately, my dedication to my department and long hours of intense work were not recognized during Student Appreciation Week. I am hurt, but I will not let that discourage me nor stop me from working as hard as I do to help in the success of FIU. Keep up the good work! It will soon pay off 🙂
I am pleased to see that student employees are being recognized for their hard work. For those who have never held a job, this is an excellent introduction to the working world. Dr Rosenberg is to be lauded for his efforts to make all employees (including the student employees) feel like part of FIU.
