FIU Hosts 13th Annual Western Hemisphere Security Colloquium


WHAT: The 13th annual Western Hemisphere Security Colloquium will bring together respected scholars and experts in the fields of politics, economics, security and defense. Titled “A New Chapter in Trans-American Engagement,” the colloquium will examine the complicated realities and regional dynamics shaping the state of risk and insecurity in the Western Hemisphere. The colloquium will focus on and explore strategic issues which actors must consider in order to recompose security relations and engage effectively but differentially with South America, the Caribbean, Canada, Mexico and Central America. Issues that will be addressed include combating illicit trafficking, rearmament in Latin America, civil – military relations, and initial impressions of the international response and long term strategic considerations in the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti.

The colloquium will be hosted by Florida International University’s Applied Research Center (ARC) and co-sponsored by the Strategic Studies Institute (SSI) at the U.S. Army War College and the Institute for National Strategic Studies (INSS) and Center for Hemispheric Defense Studies (CHDS) at National Defense University. Colloquium partners include the United States Southern Command and FIU’s Center for International Business Education (CIBER).

WHO: The colloquium will feature speakers from all over the Western Hemisphere, including General Doug Fraser, commander of  U.S. Southern Command; Ambassador Craig Kelly, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs; Ambassador Paul Trivelli, Civilian Deputy to the Commander, U.S. Southern Command; Dr. Ricardo Lopez-Murphy, Lead Economist, Foundation of Latin American Economic Research; Dr. Marcos Robledo, former Defense Policy Advisor to Chile President Michelle Bachelet; Lt. Gen. Ken Keen, Military Deputy Commander of U.S. Southern Command and Commander of the Joint Task force-Haiti; Ralph Latortue, Consul General of Haiti in Miami; and the Honorable Frank Mora, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense, Western Hemisphere.

WHEN: The event is open to the public and lasts two days, May 25 from 8.30 a.m.-5 p.m. and May 26 from 8.30 a.m. – 4.30 p.m. The registration fee is $275.
