FIYou: Maxine Hylton MS ’99

Name: Maxine Hylton MS ’99

Hometown: Kingston, Jamaica

Job Title/Department: Director, Graham Center

Campus: Modesto A. Maidique Campus

In a nutshell: I oversee operations (custodial and maintenance services), the Information Center, game room, public events, student events, and policy administration and risk management for activities outside of GC. I’m also a university administrator for free speech areas.

Number of years at FIU: 18

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Each day, it’s all about the students, the interaction and relationship I have with them. It is rewarding to be part of their personal and professional development. Over the years, when alumni return to GC for a visit, they have sought me out with updates on their success, introduced me to their spouses and children. Many of them are now colleagues.

What do you think students and your fellow faculty/staff should know about your department?

The Graham Center is truly the student’s “home away from home.” They hang out here, eat here, take power naps in the student lounge, play the piano, enjoy the game room, and take leisure classes such as salsa, zumba and capoeira and attend comedy shows and socials here.

Where is your favorite spot on campus? Why?

The garden/patio area just outside of GC. It’s shaded with large trees, the garden has a variety of flowers and, of course, the water fountain adds to the aesthetics with its soothing sound. During the cooler months it is a fantastic place to relax and enjoy the campus.

What is one thing you wish everyone knew about FIU?

There is definitely a sense of family here at FIU. Being fortunate to be involved with planning university-wide events, it is amazing for me to witness the FIU community pull together in emergencies to support our students, staff and their families.

Family snapshot:

My family migrated to New York from Jamaica. I have two brothers; the younger was born in New York. They constantly entertain me during family discussions, as their cultural differences make for interesting perspectives on issues. They have blessed me with two nieces and a nephew.

Word that best describes you: Can’t think of one, but I can think of two: Straightforward and honest.

First paying job: Summer counselor in New York during high school.

Favorite TV show: Dancing with the Stars (I wish I could dance like a pro).

What is playing on your iPod?

Don’t have an iPod – I like to be tuned into my environment – but the soulful sounds of Teddy Pendergrass, Luther Vandross or Barry White are usually favorites after a hectic day.

Your proudest accomplishment:

Completing my master’s degree. My parents were proud.

What do you do when you are not working at FIU?

I indulge my passion to travel, usually overseas, and practice yoga.
