Music alum is finalist in Oreo Cakester Jingle Contest

FIU alumnus Tommy Pirone doesn’t dunk his Oreo Cakesters and he’s written a song about it that he hopes will be a slam dunk with snack cake fans.

Pirone, who studied music technology and classical percussion at the FIU School of Music, is a semifinalist in Oreo Cakester’s Jingle Contest. You can hear Pirone’s jingle and vote on Facebook here.

His video is the first one on the no-dunk side.  Voting ends Wednesday, May 5.

Pirone is one of six entrants from across the country selected as a semi-finalist in the first-ever Oreo Cakesters jingle contest. Pirone, who proclaimed his preference for not dunking Oreo Cakesters in milk, is in the running to win a trip to New York City and a chance to record his version with American Idol contestants Matt Giraud and Anoop Desai. If he wins, his jingle will be played on national radio.

Tommy says his rendition of the jingle was inspired by the movie Forgetting Sarah Marshall and TV show Two and A Half Men. He’s a singer and songwriter, but he’s never attempted a jingle. He’s hoping the Oreo Cakester ditty will help him get discovered.

“I bought some Oreo Cakesters and I took a bite and then I wrote the song,” he said. “I wanted to get the emotion of eating the Oreo Cakester.  It’s like a moist cookie so I chose not to dunk. It’s good enough alone.”

The first-ever Oreo Cakesters jingle contest was inspired by the Oreo Cookies and milk ritual to determine if fans preferred to enjoy their Oreo Cakesters the same way – dunking or not.  Fans were invited to visit Facebook.com/Oreo to choose their side and download the Dunker or Non-Dunker jingle lyrics.

Groups of up to four people were encouraged to create a video of themselves performing the jingle in their own, creative way. Entries were required to include the Oreo Cakesters product and fans were encouraged to show how they dunk or don’t dunk their Oreo Cakesters within the video.
