Sports Update: Garrett Wittels extends hitting streak to 45 games, FIU softball makes history

Garret Wittels extended his NCAA-leading hitting streak to 45 games on the year after FIU swept South Alabama May 14-16, while the softball team earned its second-ever bid to go to NCAA Division I softball championship.

Playing at home, FIU (30-20, 16-11 Sun Belt Conference) swept South Alabama (30-23, 16-11 SBC) for the second consecutive year and shut out an opponent for the first time since March 18, 2009, with their 5-0 May 16 victory.

The other big news to come out of the diamond field over the weekend was Garrett Wittels’ continuing success. The sophomore extended his NCAA-leading consecutive hitting streak to 45 games on the year and is now tied for third all-time in NCAA Division I baseball history with Roger Schmuck of Arizona State who hit in 45 straight in 1971.
