Team Based Learning (TBL) Workshops

The Office of Global Learning Initiatives (OGLI) is sponsoring a Team Based Learning method (TBL) workshop May 25-26 from 1-5 p.m. in the Green Library (GL) 220 at Modesto A. Maidique Campus. The workshop will be conducted by Larry Michaelsen, originator of the TBL method. This free workshop is open to all FIU faculty.

TBL enables instructors of both large and small classes to facilitate multiple high-quality, active-learning teams. TBL stresses the importance of out-of-class preparation, shifting class time away from the traditional lecture/note-taking format and towards in-class application. While the faculty member maintains control of content, he/she releases the power of effective team-based problem solving to support analysis of problems using multiple perspectives, accountability, critical thinking, innovation and knowledge building. This is Michaelsen’s second TBL workshop at FIU. Several of the faculty members who attended the 2009 workshop have incorporated TBL in their existing courses. In addition, faculty will be incorporating TBL in new global learning foundations courses.

The Office of Global Learning Initiatives (OGLI) was created in August 2008 to facilitate the development of the Global Learning for Global Citizenship. Global learning is an educational approach that fosters the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of global citizenship through active, team-based, and interdisciplinary exploration of essential questions and real-world problems. Through the process of global learning, all FIU undergraduates will acquire knowledge of interconnected world conditions, the ability to analyze issues from multiple perspectives, and the willingness to engage in local, global, international, and intercultural problem solving.
